Tropical weevil - Leave bettle (Chrysomelidae)

This post is about a orange-red weevil like insect with black and white strips on it's abdomen. This tropical insect looks like a leave beetle (Chrysomelidae).

Artists and designers behind the movie production of StarShip Troopers in 1997 probably got their ideas on beetles and weevils for their movie characters. See sampling below:

  1. It's not a bettle... it's a true bug... look its mouth parts!

  2. Please check all your posts of so called "Weevils"...

First of all, Weevils are not part of the Chrysomelidae (Leaf beetles). Weevils are Weevils, that is beetles of the Curculionoidea superfamily.

Secondly, and more important, these are pictures of hemiptera, true bugs. With sucking mouthparts like a syringe. True bugs are not beetles. Beetles have grasping/cutting mouthparts, like scissors, and hard, shell-like fore wings not used for flight.

To put it into a perspective, calling true bugs (the hemiptera)a weevil is like showing a photograph of a Lion and calling it a Seal.

It belongs to the family Lygaeidae, not a weevil. Please fix it =] Trust me on this one!

  4. This bug is very common where I live in Thailand but I can't find anybody who can positively identify it. I would love to know what it is.
